Pilates Basics

What's the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Although Pilates and Yoga share many similarities, there are some differences. Pilates emphasizes flowing movement, while Yoga, for the most part, involves holding static poses.
Is Pilates exercise functional for daily activities?
Pilates can help you avoid injury during daily activities because the exercises teach you proper body mechanics.
What makes a Pilates class different from other types of exercise?
Pilates strengthens the muscles of your core while simultaneously improving your posture and increasing your overall flexibility. As your posture and flexibility improve, so do your stamina, strength and endurance.
Why do instructors use bones to cue alignment rather than soft tissue?
Using soft tissue, such as fat and muscle, can be misleading for alignment purposes because the amount of soft tissue varies in each person. Using bones to cue alignment will help you learn the landscape of your body and increase your body awareness.
What kind of clothes should I wear for a Pilates class?
Fitted tops and bottoms allow for movement in all directions. Not only will they be most effective in class, but the fitted clothing also helps the instructor see your body's alignment and help correct you. If you don't feel comfortable wearing fitted clothing, then opt for longer pants and a short sleeved top.

Exercise Prescription

Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Although Pilates provides strength and flexibility training, it must be combined with a proper diet and aerobic exercise to achieve weight loss.
Can I get a "6-pack" from doing Pilates?
Pilates strengthens the body from the inside out, and the abdominal muscles will get stronger, helping to flatten the abdomen. A "6-pack", however, will also require a proper diet and aerobic exercise.
Can I do Pilates if I have an injury?
It is best to consult your physician about your exercise regimen in relation to your injury. Although Pilates has been used as therapeutic exercise for many years, a group Pilates class is not the setting in which to rehabilitate your injury. If you are looking to rehabilitate an injury through Pilates, discuss this option with your physician and then contact a qualified Pilates instructor for personal training.
How old do I have to be to do Pilates?
First, check with facilities for age requirements. Because Pilates is a discipline, it is harder for children to grasp and do correctly. If you decide your child is mature enough to do Pilates, combine it with an aerobic exercise. According to the guidelines of the Department of Health and Human Services, children need at least 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity everyday.
Can I do Pilates if I am pregnant?
Although the exercise guidelines by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that moderate exercise after becoming pregnant is safe for a normal, healthy pregnancy, it is best to consult your doctor before doing Pilates.
Is Pilates safe for seniors?
Yes, Pilates is a safe, gentle form of exercise. However, you should always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.
Do I have to be in great shape to start Pilates?
There is no need to become more flexible, lose weight or build your strength prior to attending a Pilates class. SPIN Pilates instructors are trained to know how to modify the exercises to meet the needs of every participant.
I became frustrated during my first Pilates class. Is there some thing I should have done differently?
Many people experience a level of frustration after attending their first Pilates class. Pilates involves a body alignment that is unnatural for most people, which requires retraining your body. Have patience with yourself and the class. As you continue to attend, you will become more aware of your body alignment. If you are still having problems, consult your instructor.
How often should I do Pilates?
Pilates can be done in small increments each day or in a 60-minute class setting 3 or 4 times per week. Make sure to include other forms of exercise, such as an aerobic activity to have a well-rounded workout program.
Do you recommend Pilates as my only source of exercise?
No, Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise, however, it only incorporates a few components of fitness. For a complete exercise program, include an aerobic activity to your workout routine.
